Arson and Violence Escalate in Manipur’s Ukhrul Amid Kuki-Naga Clash
February 9, 2026
Tension rose sharply in the Litan area of Manipur's Ukhrul district on Sunday night, as villagers from the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities broke prohibitory orders and set fire to each other's homes. Reports say armed Kuki groups were also involved in some areas. Ukhrul’s District Magistrate Asish Das told The Hindu on Monday, "There were some cases of arson at night, but the situation is now under control. The security forces are trying to restore law and order." He added, "We have been communicating with the leaders of both groups to sort the issue out across the table." Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho is scheduled to visit Litan to help bring back normalcy. The trouble began on Saturday night when a Kuki group allegedly assaulted a Tangkhul member. The next day, Naga villagers confronted the chief of a Kuki village demanding that the culprits be handed over. Multiple Naga villages called for action, prompting district authorities to intervene. The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) stated the incident started from "a minor altercation involving a few intoxicated individuals from both villages" and that it was being addressed peacefully with village authorities. However, the Tangkhul students’ group Katho Katamnao Long (KKL) rejected this, saying, "no such step had been taken to rectify the situation." KKL said a Tangkhul youth named Sterling was beaten badly after switching on a torchlight at night, with Kukis attacking him because "the light fell on their faces." Both groups appealed for peace and communal harmony. The Ukhrul district has a long history of Kuki-Naga conflicts, the worst being in the 1990s when over 1,000 people died and 100,000 were displaced.
