Opposition Walks Out of Rajya Sabha Over Rahul Gandhi’s Interrupted Speech
February 9, 2026
On Monday, February 9, 2026, the Opposition staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha. They protested because Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, could not finish his speech during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address.
Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, tried to raise this issue at the start of the day’s proceedings. He also mentioned that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal spoke to the press about the interim India-U.S. trade deal instead of making a statement in Parliament.
Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan allowed Kharge to speak but warned him not to discuss matters from the Lok Sabha. Kharge said, "I am only raising issues concerning the Constitution. Parliament consists of our House and Lok Sabha... and the Constitution recognises these two Houses. We have to run according to procedures and rules." He added that the Leader of Opposition in the Lower House was "not being allowed to speak."
However, the Chairman reminded Kharge of his earlier ruling, quoting former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru: proceedings of one House should not be discussed in the other House. The Question Hour then began.
Kharge and other Opposition MPs stood demanding to speak. When the Chairman did not allow it, the Opposition raised slogans accusing the BJP of insulting women MPs. MPs from all INDIA bloc parties, except the Trinamool Congress, stood in protest.
After some time, the Opposition MPs walked out. The Question Hour continued afterwards.
This clash follows repeated disruptions in the Lok Sabha since February 3. Rahul Gandhi was stopped from quoting an article related to former Army chief M. M. Naravane’s unpublished memoir about the 2020 India-China conflict. Eight Opposition MPs have been suspended so far.
On February 5, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said he had "concrete information" that some Congress members might approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat to carry out "some unexpected act." Following this, the Speaker requested the Prime Minister not to come to the House to reply to the debate on the Motion of Thanks.
Prime Minister Modi stayed away from the proceedings amid allegations that some women MPs could have attacked him.
