Karnataka ASHA Workers to Strike; BJP MP Detained in Metro Fare Protest; Flood Control Project Launched
February 9, 2026
Karnataka’s ASHA workers await their promised monthly honorarium of ₹10,000 for over a year. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the fixed payment last year, but it is yet to be implemented. The ASHA Workers’ Union demands ₹15,000 monthly and ₹2,000 extra for city workers. Despite a January 11, 2025, meeting where the CM reaffirmed ₹10,000, no formal notifications or payments have come. The union also complains that promised incentives and paid leave have not been provided. They plan another strike on February 12. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya was detained on February 9 near Bengaluru’s Jayanagar metro station while protesting against the government’s proposed Namma Metro fare hike. He was released later and accused the Karnataka government of ‘broken’ finances. The Centre’s intervention reportedly paused the hike. Surya held an empty trunk demonstration, responding to Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar’s claim that Surya is 'an empty trunk active only on social media.' Home Minister G. Parameshwara called for a meeting on February 11 with Karnataka State Cricket Association officials to review safety at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium ahead of IPL 2026. This follows the June 4, 2025, stampede outside the stadium that killed 11 people. Clearance from the State Government, including Chief Minister approval, is required before matches can resume. On February 8, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the Bennehalla Flood Control Project in Siraguppi village. It aims to protect 37 villages across Dharwad and Gadag districts from damaging monsoon flash floods caused by the Bennehalla stream. This project came after appeals from local leaders like Navalgund MLA N. H. Konaraddi. The stream flows through multiple taluks in the region, threatening many villages during heavy rains.
