Gujarat Signs Deal with Starlink for High-Speed Satellite Internet in Remote Areas
February 9, 2026
On February 9, 2026, the Gujarat government signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink to provide high-speed satellite internet to remote, border, and underserved areas of the state. The deal was made with Satellite Communications Private Limited, a subsidiary of Elon Musk's SpaceX. The ceremony took place in Gandhinagar, attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. The LoI was exchanged between State Industries Commissioner P. Swaroop and Head of Starlink India Prabhakar Jayakumar.
This initiative aims to connect areas with limited telecom infrastructure under Gujarat's Digital Connectivity Mission and other strategies. The pilot project plans to link Common Service Centres, e-Governance facilities, government schools, district disaster management control rooms, ports, and wildlife sanctuaries.
The project focuses on tribal districts including Aspirational Districts like Narmada and Dahod. It will enhance connectivity for police outposts, disaster centres, wildlife monitoring, and agriculture research, thereby improving security and service delivery.
Additionally, the LoI will enable smart connectivity in state schools to support education. It will also make healthcare and telemedicine accessible at Primary Health Centres. Future joint training programs will build capacity in government agencies, schools, and disaster response teams.
The LoI also covers boosting connectivity in GIDC industrial parks, highway safety systems, maritime and port operations, and coastal police work.
A Joint Working Group of Gujarat government and Starlink representatives will oversee the LoI's implementation.
