The Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU) held its 56th, 57th, and 58th convocations on Monday. The university awarded degrees to 2,135 undergraduate students, 480 postgraduates, and 129 Ph.D. scholars. Six Ph.D. scholars, 26 postgraduates, and 64 undergraduates received gold medals. Prabhu Pingali, director of the TATA-Cornell Institute of Agriculture and Nutrition, gave the convocation speech. He highlighted India's transformation from food scarcity in the 1960s to a food-exporting nation, thanks to the Green Revolution. However, he noted that India still produces fewer pulses and coarse grains, causing widespread nutritional deficiencies. Mr. Pingali stated, "Advanced technologies, digital systems, and extension services must be made accessible to small and marginal farmers." He also urged changes in cultivation, cropping patterns, and agricultural policies to support crop diversification. He added, "Planning should align with changing consumer food habits while ensuring nutritional security for the population," citing the influence of western diets due to globalization. Vice-Chancellor Aldas Janaiah presented the convocation report. He announced a new policy reserving 15% of undergraduate seats for children of agricultural labourers. The fee for these seats was cut from ₹10 lakh to ₹5 lakh. The 'Scientists at Farmers' Doorstep' program saw scientists visit 1,200 villages to interact with farmers. New agricultural colleges opened in Kodangal, Nizamabad, and Huzurnagar. Prabhu Pingali received an honorary doctorate during the event. Top performers included Gannerapu Navya (B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering) with six gold medals, Snehalatha (B.Sc Agriculture) with seven gold medals, and Maram Sanjana with five gold medals.
