Kodagu DC Orders Quick Homestay Registrations and Tourism Boost by March 31
February 9, 2026
Kodagu Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekar has set a clear deadline for all homestay registrations and license renewals in the district. During a District Tourism Development Committee meeting in Madikeri on Monday, he ordered officials to complete the work by March 31 through offline inspections, since online services are suspended. Deputy Director of Tourism, Nithin Chakki, said that by February 7, 100 new homestay license applications and 180 renewals were received. The Deputy Commissioner wants officials to personally visit properties to clear all pending cases by the end of March. The meeting also focused on increasing homestay inspections to fight drug use issues. Key tourism spots got special attention. Mr. Somashekar reviewed work at Raja Seat and ‘Coorg Village’—a project showcasing Kodagu’s traditional culture and products. He asked the Madikeri City Municipal Council and Horticulture Department to form sub-committees including stakeholders and traffic police to strengthen Raja Seat as a tourist spot. Horticulture Deputy Director Shashidhar noted that earlier plans to allot stalls to self-help groups did not get enough interest. Tourist overcrowding and parking jams at Raja Seat are major concerns. Kodagu Chamber of Commerce president Nagendra Prasad urged quick action. The Deputy Commissioner ordered immediate steps to improve parking space and start related works soon. He also plans to push Mysuru Railway authorities for a toy train project at Raja Seat. On World Tourism Day, Mr. Somashekar wants more meaningful celebrations. He launched a ‘Clean and Beautiful Kodagu’ campaign from March 1 to April 1 to gradually stop plastic use in the district. To stop tourist overcharging on the way to Mandalpatti, a prepaid vehicle service from Madikeri is proposed. Another serious issue raised was misleading product branding. Participants said many products like wine, chocolates, spices, and silk sold under Kodagu’s name are not truly local. Homestays Association president Monty Ganesh asked for strict action to protect genuine Kodagu products. The Deputy Commissioner warned about cheap fake wine labeled as Kodagu homemade and stressed public health safety. The meeting showed a strong push on tourism quality, safety, and local pride in Kodagu.
