Iran May Dilute Uranium to End Sanctions: Atomic Chief Signals Flexibility in US Talks
February 10, 2026
Iran could agree to dilute its most highly enriched uranium if all financial sanctions are removed, said Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation. He gave this clear signal on Monday, marking one of Tehran’s strongest positions in recent talks with the US.
US and Iranian diplomats met last week in Oman through Omani mediators to revive diplomatic talks. This comes after US President Donald Trump sent a naval flotilla to the region, raising concerns over possible military action. Last month, Iran saw a crackdown on anti-government protests, and Trump threatened military intervention but did not act.
Washington demands Iran give up its uranium stockpile enriched up to 60 percent, close to weapons-grade 90 percent. Eslami said, “The possibility of diluting 60pc enriched uranium … depends on whether, in return, all sanctions are lifted or not.” However, he noted no talks occurred about sending Iran’s enriched uranium abroad.
Following these talks, Ali Larijani, adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will visit Oman to meet officials and discuss regional and bilateral matters. The date and location of the next round of talks remain undecided.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated the upcoming talks offer “an appropriate opportunity for a fair and balanced resolution” if the US avoids rigid demands and honors commitments. Iran insists on lifting sanctions and protecting its nuclear rights, including uranium enrichment.
Tehran claims its nuclear program is peaceful and has paused enrichment since recent US strikes on its facilities. The US seeks to include Iran’s ballistic missile program in talks, but Iran rejects this.
In a televised statement on Monday, Khamenei urged Iranians to join the 1979 revolution anniversary march, saying, “The presence of the people in the march and their expression of loyalty to the Islamic Republic will cause the enemy to stop coveting Iran.”
