Uttar Pradesh Budget Session Opens with Protests, Economic Survey Unveiled
February 10, 2026
The Uttar Pradesh Budget Session started on Monday amid protests by Samajwadi Party (SP) lawmakers. They raised issues including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, UGC regulations, inflation, and unemployment. The uproar began as Governor Anandiben Patel began her House speech, with Opposition leaders shouting slogans like “Governor go back”. After the Governor's address, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna presented the government's Economic Survey. It highlighted an investment-led growth strategy aimed to make Uttar Pradesh a $1-trillion economy. This is the first time the state has presented a review before the budget. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told reporters he hopes for calm and constructive talks. He said, “The legislature is an important pillar of democracy. If any member has to raise any issue, then instead of disrupting the proceedings, they can hold a dialogue, because the government believes in dialogue to resolve problems.” The Budget for 2026-27 will be presented on February 11, with the session running from February 9 to 20. Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati slammed the government’s policies, calling them “poor” and said people from all sections are distressed. In an X post, she criticized the Governor’s speech for not focusing on social upliftment or state development. Ms. Mayawati added, “But above all these, they are worried about their life, property and religion, towards which the Hon’ble Governor should have drawn the attention of the government so that the people of the State as well as the Opposition could have got some assurance.”
