Meghalaya Coal Mine Blast Death Toll Rises to 30, Assam Govt Offers ₹5 Lakh Aid

The death toll in the coal mine blast in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district has risen to 30. Two more injured miners died at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on February 9 night. Both were from Katigorah in Assam’s Cachar district. The health department named them as Ramchandra Baishnab and Nimaruddin. Nine injured miners from the blast were admitted to the SMCH. The explosion happened on February 5 at an illegal coal mine in the remote Thangsku area of Mynsngat village, Meghalaya. Meghalaya's government has ordered a judicial inquiry to find out how the blast occurred and who is responsible. Assam's government announced an ex gratia payout of ₹5 lakh for each family of the deceased from the state. So far, eight labourers from Assam, all from Cachar district, have died in the tragedy.
