Pak Supreme Court Allows Salman Safdar to Meet Imran Khan in Jail as Amicus Curiae
February 10, 2026
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday allowed PTI lawyer Salman Safdar to meet imprisoned leader Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. The court declared Safdar as amicus curiae, or “friend of the court.” This decision came after a prior urgent request to meet Imran was rejected by a two-judge bench.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, said the order could not be granted without hearing the government’s side. The court then summoned the government for today’s hearing.
At the hearing, Chief Justice Afridi appointed Safdar to visit Adiala Jail and submit a written report on Imran Khan’s living conditions by tomorrow.
PTI’s Latif Khosa and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan appeared before the court. Khosa was barred from speaking at first. AGP Awan said a written report on Imran’s conditions was already submitted on August 28, 2023, including a medical report from early August.
“The court said, ‘After the August 24, 2023 order, there has not been any order on record which was satisfactory to the SC,’” said the bench.
The court said Safdar should get full access to Imran without delay. CJP Afridi said, “We have full faith in Salman Safdar.” He assured help if Safdar faces any trouble at the jail.
Safdar asked if the report should cover only living conditions. The judge replied, “Submit a report of the living conditions only.” AGP also asked the court to note that a report was already filed.
Latif Khosa asked again to meet Imran but the court rejected the request. The hearing was adjourned till February 12.
Imran Khan has been in prison since August 5, 2023, currently in Rawalpindi’s Central Jail. PTI recently filed a memorandum claiming that Imran’s rights and privacy have been violated, including concerns about a secret medical procedure done without informing his family.
The court’s order allows Safdar to independently inspect and report on Imran’s jail conditions, aiming for transparency amid these concerns.
