As the Lunar New Year holiday nears, China has called top delivery and ride-hailing companies to a special session to protect gig workers’ rights. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, along with six other agencies, held an "employment administrative guidance" meeting with 16 major platform and logistics firms. Participants included Meituan, Alibaba Group's units Taobao Shangou and Freshippo, Didi Chuxing, SF Express, Geely-backed CaoCao, and YTO Express. The session stressed the need to "continuously improve labour management and effectively safeguard the rights and interests" of the country’s more than 200 million gig workers, said the ministry on Monday. This group of workers is vital during the busy holiday season. Separately, Alibaba’s ride-hailing arm of Amap was also summoned due to concerns over "mismanagement of third-party ride-hailing partners, undue suppression of rates and inadequate emergency response measures". The Ministry of Transport and a panel of at least 11 industry authorities urged Amap to "strengthen care and support for drivers during the holiday period, and persistently improve working conditions and the employment environment". Amap responded by pledging to "strictly meet the requirements of the meeting" and to "conduct comprehensive rectification". These moves show China’s push to ensure gig workers get fair treatment during one of the country’s busiest times.
