Ahead of Lunar New Year, ads for suspected illegal mainland Chinese cleaning services targeting Hong Kong households remain visible on the social media platform RedNote. This is despite recent arrests by Hong Kong immigration authorities. The South China Morning Post found several posts promoting domestic cleaning, some saying “professional local team sent to Hong Kong home” or offering to “deep clean your home in Hong Kong.” None of the ads clearly named the janitors’ origins. Meanwhile, the Federation of Hong Kong Food and Beverage Industries Trade Unions reported a surge in posts from Shenzhen-based chefs advertising private catering services. These include Lunar New Year reunions and private banquets, with charges starting at HK$500 (US$64) per hour. Some packages include ingredients and waitstaff along with the chef. The union condemned these suspected illegal labor practices and warned about serious food safety risks. A union spokesman said, “We urge the relevant government departments to strengthen inspections, enforcement and public education to safeguard the employment rights of local catering industry workers and ensure food safety for the public.”
