Bangladesh Election Rallies Heat Up Ahead of Vote, BNP Leads the Race
February 10, 2026
Bangladesh’s election campaign is at full speed with the final day of rallies on Monday before the big vote on Thursday. Political parties brought the 2024 uprising back into the spotlight. Tens of thousands of supporters crowded the capital, Dhaka, waving flags and joining rallies. The country will choose 350 lawmakers in this election. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, who returned from exile in December after 17 years, is the clear front-runner. The BNP’s main rival is Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh’s biggest Islamist party, led by Shafiqur Rahman. Jamaat has joined forces with the National Citizen Party (NCP), which was created by students who led the 2024 uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic rule. Tarique Rahman addressed thousands of BNP fans, who cheered wildly as if at a concert. The party symbol, a sheaf of rice, was waved high by the crowd. Rahman said, "The BNP alone has a plan to run the country and the experience to do so," paying tribute to his late parents, former leaders Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. With the stakes high, this election is shaping up as a fierce contest to shape Bangladesh’s future.
