China’s annual Spring Festival travel rush started on Monday before the Lunar New Year holiday. This event is called the world’s largest annual human migration. This year’s Lunar New Year falls on February 17 and marks the Year of the Horse. China will have a nine-day public holiday from February 15 to 23. This longer holiday, one day more than last year’s eight days, hopes to boost spending on travel and meals during the festival. A state planning official said on Thursday that China expects 9.50 billion passenger trips during the 40-day travel period. This beats last year’s 9.02 billion domestic trips. Here are some glimpses of Lunar New Year celebrations across China.
