Abu Dhabi has cut speed limits by 20 km/h on three major roads to make the streets safer. The new rules started on February 9, 2026. On Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road (E22), limits dropped from 160 km/h to 140 km/h between Al Nahda and Baniyas Interchange, and from 140 km/h to 120 km/h further along. Al Rawdah Road (E30) now has a 100 km/h limit, down from 120 km/h. All these cuts apply both ways and are enforceable. Authorities say this change is to reduce crashes, which remain high due to speeding and more vehicles on roads. Earlier trials with variable speed signs showed that lower speeds help prevent accidents, especially in bad weather or heavy traffic. Abu Dhabi has also used dynamic speed limits and truck movement bans to ease congestion and improve safety. Drivers must follow posted signs as GPS apps may lag in updates. Speed cameras and fines are now stricter. These steps align with UAE’s wider plan to cut road deaths by enforcing safer driving rules. Officials stress that lower limits alone are not enough; enforcement and driver awareness are key to safer roads. Abu Dhabi may add more real-time speed management systems on other highways soon to keep up with rising traffic and safety demands.
