Indonesia Embraces Digital Finance to Include Millions of Unbanked Citizens

Indonesia is turning to digital finance to help millions who do not have access to traditional banking. At the China Conference: Southeast Asia 2026 in Jakarta, Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, chairman of PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia, said, “In Indonesia, the role of digitalisation is essential.” PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia is the country’s oldest bank and is focusing on expanding financial inclusion. Earlier this month, Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority set three main goals: to strengthen the financial sector’s resilience, build a supportive financial ecosystem, and promote sustainable finance. Meanwhile, Ant International shared how it grew its user base in Asia through digital methods and learned from China's experience, which has the largest population for digital finance. Indonesia is combining regional lessons and global partnerships to boost banking access for its people.
