Six Mysterious Deaths in Bulgaria’s Mountains Spark Conspiracy and Political Shock
February 10, 2026
Bulgaria is shaken by the mysterious deaths of six people found in its mountains. Police say this case has no comparison in the country. The victims were found at two locations: a burned lodge near Petrohan pass and a campervan near Okolchitsa Peak.
Three men were discovered first, each with gunshot wounds to the head. Forensic experts believe these were self-inflicted. DNA confirmed no one else was involved. Later, three more bodies were found—two men and a 15-year-old boy. Authorities suspect two murders and one suicide in this group.
Five of the six dead worked for the National Protected Areas Control Agency, a nature group that also acted as forest rangers near the Serbian border. The border area is known for smuggling and illegal logging. Some reports say the men practiced Tibetan Buddhism and showed signs of mental instability.
Families believe the victims were killed because they saw criminal acts. Ralitsa Asenova, mother of one victim, called it "a professionally committed murder."
The case remains unclear, feeding public mistrust during Bulgaria’s political instability. The country is heading toward its eighth election in five years and remains without a government. Former President Rumen Radev called the deaths "a political shock" and urged a fast investigation.
Survey data shows that 70% of Bulgarians believe in conspiracy theories, highlighting the deep spread of misinformation. The tragic mystery remains a hot topic, with authorities under pressure to find answers.
