China could become the world's biggest economy by 2036, a new survey has found. The Atlantic Council polled 447 global experts and 58% said China will surpass the US by then. Only 33% believe the US will stay number one economically. Despite this, 73% of experts think the US will remain the strongest military power, with just 24% believing China will take that lead. Experts are split on technology and diplomacy, suggesting both nations could compete closely. Melanie Hart, senior director at Atlantic Council, warned, "I think we underestimate China’s strengths and ambitions at our peril." She added, "Across the board we are still ahead, but we have almost zero margin for error." The report also highlights risks of war. Over 40% of the surveyed experts expect another world war in the next decade. Among them, 43% think Taiwan or the East and South China Seas could trigger conflict. Hart said China may delay military action toward Taiwan. "They seem to have the feeling at this moment in time that maybe time is actually on their side," she said. However, she warned Beijing will seek to isolate Taiwan in the near future. "We have to be very vigilant for that," Hart said. The survey included mostly US-based, over-50 male experts from various sectors. This report signals a tense balance: China rising economically, the US strong militarily, and Taiwan in the middle of growing tensions.
