A mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, killed nine people on Tuesday. Seven victims were shot at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The suspect later died from a self-inflicted injury. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said 27 others were injured. Two had serious wounds, 25 were less severe. Canadian media reported the shooter was female. The RCMP did not confirm the identity. Police received an alert about an active shooter at the school in the afternoon. They found six dead on site and one more died on the way to hospital. Two more bodies were found at a nearby home, linked to the event. At the school, police found the suspected shooter deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound. The small town of Tumbler Ridge has around 2,400 residents. It lies over 1,100 kilometres north of Vancouver. The local municipality said, "There are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight." Student Darian Quist said he was locked down in class during the shooting. He described receiving disturbing photos before police arrived and evacuated the school. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence "unimaginable." Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his devastation and sent condolences via social media. RCMP’s northern district commander Ken Floyd called the day "incredibly difficult and emotional". Police are checking more homes linked to the incident. Federal opposition leader Pierre Poilievre called the shooting a "senseless act of violence." Mass shootings are very rare in Canada, making this event all the more shocking.
