Violent Protests in Albania Demand PM Rama's Resignation Amid Corruption Scandal
February 11, 2026
Police in Albania fired water cannons and tear gas against protesters outside Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office in Tirana on Tuesday night. The demonstrators called for Rama to resign, following a major corruption scandal. Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and flares at police. Clashes also broke out near Albania’s parliament.
At least 16 people were hurt and sent to hospital. Another 13 people were arrested during the unrest. Media reports vary on whether the injured are police, protesters, or both.
This protest is part of ongoing antigovernment demonstrations in Albania. They began in November after prosecutors accused Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku of interfering with government contracts. Balluku was briefly suspended but reinstated after Rama’s request.
Protesters demand both Rama and Balluku resign. They also want parliament to end Balluku’s immunity for prosecution.
More than 1,300 police stood guard at Tuesday’s protest, just weeks after another violent rally in Tirana. Both demonstrations were organized by Sali Berisha, leader of the opposition and former prime minister. Berisha said the protests show a "peaceful uprising" is underway, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Berisha himself has faced corruption charges.
Political analyst Mentor Kikia told AP that both the government and opposition have problems. He said, "Citizens are distrustful, having consistently voted for the lesser evil to remove the greater evil from power. The current perception is that if Rama leaves, Berisha will return. One left power because of corruption, the other must also leave power because of corruption."
