Tambaram Velachery Road Commuters Left Roofless as Shelter Removed During Road Widening
February 11, 2026
On Tambaram Velachery Main Road near Mahalakshmi Nagar bus stand in Selaiyur, bus commuters face a tough time. The narrow shelter they used for shade and seating was removed after the State Highways widened the road section. Now, commuters are not only seatless but roofless too.
The shelter was torn down and its poles moved to the roadside, hinting at a new shelter to be built. However, it has been over a month and no shelter is yet constructed. Meanwhile, a barricade stands where the shelter once was, only to prevent wrong way vehicles.
Commuters have no choice but to sit on steel stairs, raised platforms, and other makeshift seats offered by nearby shops like Madurai Military Hotel, R.K. Sri Muniyandi Vilas, and Tasty Hotel. Although not protesting, this situation shows official neglect.
The State Highways department is urged to provide temporary seating, taking a page from Chennai Metro Rail Limited, which arranges makeshift shelters when moving bus stops.
The road widening effort faces challenges. Parts of the road are narrow and the widening faces legal hurdles, especially near Camp Road Junction, delaying stop relocations. Despite this, temporary solutions for commuters are needed urgently.
During rush hours at Camp Road Junction, many commuters stand waiting like a crowd at a rock concert, some relying on shop owners' hospitality to rest. This discomfort emphasizes the pressing need for proper commuter facilities amid road works.
