Cornwall's Cardinham Hits Record 41 Days of Constant Rain, Floods Hit Hard
February 11, 2026
Cardinham, Cornwall, has endured 41 straight days of rain, the most in the UK. So far, 366mm of rain has fallen, making it Cornwall’s wettest January on record. Local artist Sarah Cowen said, “It’s been horrendous. We’ve never known anything like it. The mud, the silt, the endless rain.” The constant wet weather has made life tough. Road damage forced the closure of a road into Cardinham, while farmers like Nick Hoskin keep cows indoors for safety. He said, “This is the worst weather we’ve had” in 40 years of farming. Residents complain about soggy gardens and a lack of sunny days. Loveday Sutton of the garden club explained, “We don’t get cold, bright days any more. It’s relentless rain.” At Bodmin Airfield, the Met Office station recorded these extreme conditions. Ian Bryant, the station manager, called this “just a wet winter” and dismissed climate change concerns as a “hobgoblin.” Outdoor workers and firefighters remain upbeat but hope for a dry day soon. Recreational manager Sam Lebbern said, “There’s a sense of camaraderie in the face of adversity.” The AeroDine cafe at the airfield has seen business drop sharply. Owner Ed Salatas said, “Now we just need a break so the customers will come back.” The Met Office predicts a possible sunny day Saturday, but rain will return Sunday, so relief may be brief. Across Cornwall, people are soaked but standing strong in the relentless rain.
