The Legal Coordination Committee for Government Doctors (LCC) has demanded that the Tamil Nadu government immediately conduct transfer counselling for obstetricians in government medical colleges. They highlight that last week, transfers were done for other doctors but obstetricians, despite there being 57 vacancies, were left out. Multiple requests to the Director of Medical Education have been ignored. The LCC noted that obstetricians in Tamil Nadu earn some of the lowest salaries in India. Yet, they work hard saving lives and helping reduce both maternal and infant mortality rates. "Denying obstetricians the opportunity for transfer counselling — while it is given to other specialists — is unjust," the LCC said. They also pointed out that long travel to work causes mental stress and physical tiredness, harming doctors’ family and personal lives. The LCC also expressed concern over the state’s plan to reduce pediatrician posts to create positions for DM-trained neonatologists. They warned that cutting pediatrician posts amid increased patient numbers will cause serious problems in the future. "The right approach would be to increase pediatrician posts while also creating new neonatologist posts," the LCC said. They called on the Tamil Nadu State Health Minister to intervene quickly, conduct transfer counselling for obstetricians, and stop the plan to reduce pediatrician posts.
