The Karnataka government has approved moving horse racing activities from the old Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) grounds to a new track at Kunigal Stud Farm. The government will provide 110 acres at Kunigal, about 60 km from Bangalore, for this purpose. BTC must vacate its current High Grounds location within two years, said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil in a post-Cabinet briefing. Patil added, "The existing turf club in Bengaluru will be turned into a lung space. The turf club has been asked to move to the new premises within two years. The land at Kunigal Stud Farm will be given on a 29 years lease with an extension facility of another 29 years." BTC will retain 4 acres at the current site, which has a heritage building, to continue club operations. The lease will be 2.5% of the guidance value of land at both places. BTC currently operates on 83 acres granted in 1923 by the Maharaja of Mysore. The lease expired in 2009, prompting government directions to vacate the city center. After years of delays and race cancellations, BTC agreed to shift racing activities by October 2025. Kunigal Stud Farm, with a 232-year history, is known for horse breeding. It has veterinary hospitals, stables, and paddocks. Earlier plans to develop a township on some of Kunigal’s land were dropped after protests. This move ends a long tug-of-war over BTC's city land and aims to create a green lung space in Bangalore while modernizing the racing facilities outside the city center.
