A court ruling in Peru restricts government control over the Chancay megaport, mostly owned by China’s Cosco Shipping Ports. This decision has alarmed the US, which issued a warning about Peru’s sovereignty. The US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs stated on X: "We support Peru’s sovereign right to oversee critical infrastructure in its own territory. Let this be a cautionary tale for the region and the world: cheap Chinese money costs sovereignty." The Chancay facility is a $1.3 billion deep-water port about 80 km north of Lima. It spans 180 hectares and can handle up to one million containers annually. Beijing reacted sharply against the US warning, escalating tensions over the strategic Pacific coast hub in South America.
