China Reveals New Consumer Price Basket, Shifts Focus from Food and Housing
February 13, 2026
China has revealed for the first time the detailed makeup of its consumer price index (CPI) basket. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has adjusted the weights to better show how people spend money today. The weight for food prices dropped to 17.2%, and housing now stands at 22.1%. Meanwhile, transport and communications increased to 14.3%, education, culture, and entertainment rose to 11.4%, and healthcare climbed to 8.9%. The NBS said these changes help the CPI better match residents’ consumption habits and improve price tracking. They also aim to make China’s CPI comparable with international standards. In line with the digital age, the survey sample now includes 120,000 retail outlets. This includes new categories like membership-only stores and instant flash-sale online platforms. The NBS stated, “This is set to adapt to the latest changes in residents’ consumption structure, further improve the representativeness of the price index, and more accurately reflect changes in consumer market prices.” No exact 2020 comparisons were given. This revamp highlights China’s focus on a service-driven economy and the digital market’s growing role.
