Women-led Renewable Energy to Drive Rural India's Green Growth and Safety
February 13, 2026
India has made huge strides in electrification, but millions of rural women still face unsafe, unreliable power. They cook in smoky kitchens and walk dark roads, risking their safety. The government now focuses on Decentralised Renewable Energy (DRE) to fix this. Chhattisgarh is a pioneer, with solar pumps and electrified health centers supporting renewable targets. Yet 17% of rural homes here lack reliable electricity, and 70% still use harmful biomass for cooking. This causes health risks and limits girls' study time. Women spend hours collecting fuel, cutting into income and rest. Experts say it is vital to move women from just users to energy leaders. Chhattisgarh's new policy plans 5,000 women-led renewable projects and 50,000 green jobs by 2030. This includes training women as solar technicians, promoting women-owned energy businesses, and empowering local panchayats. Such women-led models offer safer communities and economic independence. "Our sarpanch didi showed us how solar runs schools and irrigation, giving us food and security," said a resident from Kanker. With investments possibly reaching ₹2,500 crore, these projects could create thousands of local jobs while supporting India's clean energy goals. Experts warn ignoring women in energy decisions may deepen inequalities. But placing energy control in women's hands ensures the last mile becomes the frontline of progress.
