China Charges Former AstraZeneca China Head with Fraud and Illegal Trading
February 13, 2026
AstraZeneca’s former China head, Leon Wang, has been formally charged with medical insurance fraud, illegal trading, and unlawful collection of personal information. This comes over a year after investigations began. The Swedish-British drug maker confirmed to Financial Times and Reuters that Wang was one of two indicted individuals. AstraZeneca’s recent earnings report mentioned the charges but did not name Wang, only describing him as a former executive vice-president and "senior employee." AstraZeneca stated it was not accused of gaining from Wang’s illegal acts. The company did not reply to the South China Morning Post's request for comment. This development adds pressure on foreign pharmaceutical firms in China as they face tighter regulations and stronger local competition in the country’s huge market.
