IGRMS Revives Exhibit Featuring Frog Marriage Ritual to Invoke Rain
February 13, 2026
The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), under the Ministry of Culture, has restarted its ‘Exhibit of the Month’ program to attract visitors and show India’s rich cultural traditions. This month, the museum presents a special exhibit on a traditional rain-invoking ritual from Chhattisgarh called the symbolic marriage of frogs. A clay frog model is displayed alongside details of this unique ritual.
According to an IGRMS note, the ritual is practiced by farming communities during droughts in the month of ‘Sawan’ when the monsoon is delayed. The belief is that frogs are closely linked to rainfall and the start of the monsoon season. Villagers come together for the ritual, which involves a procession, community participation, and various activities to appeal for rain.
This exhibit offers a glimpse into India’s diverse and deep-rooted cultural heritage, connecting traditions with nature and community life.
