US Marine Veteran's Wife Arrested by ICE During Green Card Interview in Las Vegas
February 13, 2026
A US Marine veteran, Patrick Baja, is seeking help after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested his wife, Diana Butnarciuc, during an interview for her permanent resident card in Las Vegas. Butnarciuc, who came from Moldova in 2008, lives with her husband and two children, works, and pays taxes. However, ICE detained her at the Henderson Detention Center following a 2018 deportation order. Baja said, "I served the country, and you know, I would think that the country would serve us in this instance." The couple had waited five years for the citizenship interview, but just five minutes into it, ICE officials arrested Diana, leaving the family shocked and emotional. Despite her claim of political asylum being denied in 2018, Baja filed an "I-130 petition for an alien relative" in 2020 to start her green card process. Their attorney, Darren Heyman, said Diana has no criminal record and entered the US legally. He added, "We just want her to be given the same process that was given to lots of people before." Heyman pointed out that immigration policies changed under the Trump administration, making cases like this more complicated. He hopes to secure bond for Diana to free her from detention so they can complete the green card process and ask a judge to cancel the deportation order. ICE has not yet responded to the case inquiries.
