Flight and Hotel Prices Soar in Colombo Ahead of India-Pakistan T20 World Cup Match
February 13, 2026
Prices for flights and hotels in Colombo have shot up sharply as thousands of fans prepare to watch the India vs Pakistan Twenty20 World Cup match on Sunday. The game will be held at Sri Lanka's largest stadium, which is fully booked with about 35,000 tickets sold. Hotels in Colombo have doubled their prices, with rooms now costing as much as $660 per night, compared to the usual $100-$150. Flight fares surged too. Flights from Chennai, just 1.5 hours away, have more than tripled, costing between $623 and $756. Flights from Delhi rose over 50% to roughly $666. According to Nalin Jayasundera, President of Sri Lanka Inbound Tour Operators, "Most fans are coming on all-inclusive packages that could be $1,500-$2000 or even higher depending on ticket, hotel, and flight prices." Tourism is Sri Lanka's third biggest source of foreign income. The country hopes that hosting such big sporting events will help its recovering economy after a tough financial crisis and deadly cyclone. Buddhika Hewawasam, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, told Reuters that about 20% of the 100,000 visitors to Sri Lanka in early February came for the cricket match. He added, "This is clearly showing confidence in Sri Lanka as a neutral cricket venue. Whether it’s India, Pakistan or Bangladesh, this is a welcome message to all South Asian countries that they can play cricket in Sri Lanka." Lahore resident Mian Sultan said he is excited to watch the match and has spent $800 on a front-row seat. He said, "I think it’s going to be a great experience," and added he believes Pakistan can win on Sunday.
