Bangalore Turf Club Plans ₹600 Cr New Track at Kunigal, Must Move in 2 Years
February 13, 2026
The Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) has two years to move its horse racing activities from High Grounds, Bengaluru, to a new site at Kunigal Stud Farm. The club was given 110 acres by the government to build the new track in the historic 232-year-old estate. The BTC estimates that building a 2,200 to 2,400 meter international-standard racing track could cost up to ₹600 crore. Even with lower standards, the cost would be around ₹300 crore. A club member said, “The BTC does not have such resources of its own. We have to now look for corporate sponsorships or investments based on revenue-sharing models, and other means to raise money.”
Moving to Kunigal is the only option as it is the nearest large land parcel available. “The government has decided on it. The main thing is to mobilise money. We are yet to work out a detailed project report,” said another member. Some believe two years is a tight deadline but more time could be requested.
The BTC has had trouble securing land before. A 2008 plan to move to Doddajala failed due to environmental issues. To raise funds, the BTC plans to increase its membership from 350 to 1,000, breaking the long-held exclusivity. They also consider expanding off-course betting centers beyond the existing eight.
The Cabinet has approved giving the BTC four acres including a heritage building at its current location for remaining operations. However, the club had requested six acres for parking and facilities. This may lead to further talks.
The BTC must also approach the Supreme Court to withdraw its ongoing case against relocation. A member said, “After the compromise petition is filed, the land will be handed over for development, and the two-year timeline will kick in.”
Racing will continue on the old grounds until the new track is ready. After the move, only bookmaker, tote operations, and club facilities will remain in Bengaluru.
The current location was chosen in 1923 for its natural high ground and good drainage, important for horse racing. The land was granted by the Maharaja of Mysore. Now, the century-old club faces a costly and challenging future as it transitions to Kunigal.
