Extortion Threats in Peel Region Push Families to Leave Canada, Police Struggle to Control
February 14, 2026
Extortion threats in Peel Region are forcing families to leave Canada as police struggle to control gang activities crossing provincial and international borders. Dharmjit, an Indian-origin man, became a target in October 2025. He told police and blocked threatening numbers, but calls kept coming. On November 25, gunfire struck his farm, and police advised his family to stay away. After they returned, the shootings resumed. "So if the police cannot protect you, the police have nothing to protect you. So what do you do? They say, leave from your house, leave your house. Where do you go? Why do you want to buy another house in the same area or the same country? Better leave the country," Dharmjit said.
Extortion targeting Indians is rising in Canada. The local government is urging federal help to fight this organized crime. Lawrence Bishnoi, an Indian-Canadian gangster jailed in India, is believed to mastermind these operations. The Bishnoi gang reportedly identifies targets, demands money, shoots at properties, records videos of the attacks, and uses them to threaten victims with more violence. Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said, "he does not have any evidence to point to the Bishnoi gang" in these extortion cases in Surrey and Brampton.
