Karnataka HC Questions Inspector Over Lamborghini Seizure, Stays Tax Fraud Probe
February 14, 2026
The Karnataka High Court has raised serious concerns about a Senior Motor Vehicle Inspector (SMVI) who seized a Lamborghini Huracan Evo from the owner's private garage without his presence or prior notice. The car was towed to an undisclosed police station amid allegations of underpaid road tax based on forged documents. The court also stayed the investigation against H1 Car Care, Bengaluru, which owns the car, following a complaint lodged by the SMVI, Ranjith N., and an FIR filed by Kodigehalli police. Justice M. Nagaprasanna ruled this interim order after H1 Car Care's petition. The car owner, J. Ramakrishnaiah, bought the luxury vehicle from an authorized dealer for over ₹3 crore and paid ₹1 crore as GST and ₹60 lakh as road tax. The court questioned the SMVI's actions, highlighting that he entered private property and seized the vehicle without any official notice, forcing the owner to search multiple police stations to find the car. The High Court noted that Kodigehalli police falsely claimed the car was not in their custody, while it was later revealed to be near Yelahanka New Town police station. The court asked the State Public Prosecutor to justify the SMVI’s conduct and warned that an inquiry could be ordered if the seizure was illegal. It also indicated the SMVI might have to pay damages from his own pocket. Moreover, the FIR accused some Transport Department officials of deleting registration data to allow the car's registration with forged documents. The vehicle, manufactured in 2021, was initially a demo car sold with temporary registration to another company, which returned it unregistered. The court's interim order came on February 13, 2026.
