Nearly 200 wrestlers from across Bihar are gathering in Jamui on Saturday for the two-day 'Maati Ka Bal - Dangal'. This State-level wrestling event is jointly organised by Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA) and the Wrestling Association of Bihar. This is the second edition of the event, after last year's success in Begusarai. So far, 186 wrestlers have registered — 162 men and 24 women — with registration closing Friday midnight. Men's competitors will fight in five weight categories: 50-60 kg, 60-70 kg, 70-80 kg, 80-90 kg, and 90 kg and above. Women will compete in two categories: 50-60 kg and 60 kg and above. The top three winners will earn cash prizes of ₹1 lakh, ₹50,000, and ₹25,000. Additionally, the best wrestler will receive a silver mace. Crafted in 1954, the mace symbolizes excellence and was first given in 1975 to wrestler Vishwanath Singh on winning the 'Bihar Kesari' title. Meanwhile, the BSSA announced 514 athletes selected for sports scholarships. “Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who unveiled the scheme last year, will present scholarships under three categories: 'Utkarsh' (₹20 lakh), 'Saksham' (₹5 lakh), and 'Prerna' (₹3 lakh),” said BSSA Director General and CEO Raveendran Sankaran. The scholarships help athletes buy equipment, train, maintain diet, and attend sports events nationally and internationally.
