Hong Kong Considers More English Teaching in Schools Amid Language Policy Debate
February 14, 2026
Hong Kong is preparing to let more schools teach in English, stirring debate after decades of discussions on language policy. Authorities and the schools’ sector believe now is the right moment to adjust teaching methods. But some critics argue the change is driven by political reasons. Chan, 19, from Yan Chai Hospital Law Chan Chor Si College in Kowloon Bay, shared her story. Her school used Chinese as the main teaching language but taught math and biology in English. "I felt hesitant the moment I started writing," Chan said. "I questioned whether my plot would be as well written or creative as those of students from EMI schools. I thought my writing was formulaic and lagged behind." She added that many students from Chinese Medium Instruction (CMI) schools face similar struggles when moving to higher education. The debate continues over whether expanding English Medium Instruction (EMI) will help or stress students in Hong Kong.
