Trump Backs Regime Change in Iran as US Sends Second Aircraft Carrier to Middle East
February 14, 2026
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that regime change in Iran "seems like that would be the best thing that could happen." This statement came as the Pentagon deployed a second aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford, to the Middle East. Trump made these comments after a military event at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He criticized Iran's long nuclear talks, saying, "For 47 years, they’ve been talking and talking and talking," while US troops have suffered serious injuries.
The Gerald R. Ford will join the Abraham Lincoln carrier and other military assets already in the region. This move supports US pressure on Iran, as Washington seeks to include Iran's ballistic missiles and regional armed groups in nuclear negotiations. Iran has agreed to discuss nuclear limits but refuses to talk about missiles.
Trump warned that if no deal is made, a strike on Iran is possible. Asked about targets, he said, "the dust" remains at nuclear sites and "we probably grab whatever is left." The US had struck Iranian nuclear facilities last year.
The Gerald R. Ford is the newest and largest US aircraft carrier. It has more than 75 aircraft and advanced radar and was operating in the Caribbean before moving to the Middle East. Officials expect it to take at least a week to arrive. This is the first time since last year that the US has deployed two carriers in the region.
The US Southern Command stated it will keep focusing on countering threats in Latin America despite this deployment. Extended deployments like this can affect ship morale. The Ford was originally planned for Europe but was redirected.
Trump said, "In case we don’t make a deal, we’ll need it … if we need it, we’ll have it ready." The US military is showing readiness amid diplomatic and military tensions with Iran.
