Two sailors were seriously injured after a high-speed collision between the New Zealand and France yachts at the SailGP race in Auckland on Saturday. Louis Sinclair, a grinder on the New Zealand team, suffered compound fractures in both legs and is receiving treatment in hospital. The New Zealand team said, "Black Foils grinder Louis Sinclair is in a stable condition in Auckland Hospital after suffering injuries to both legs during the collision with the French during racing today." A sailor from the French team was also injured. The crash happened during the third of four scheduled races that day. As the boats approached the first gate at nearly 90 km/h, the New Zealand yacht lost control and spun into the path of the French boat. The French yacht rode over the New Zealand catamaran, severely damaging both vessels which locked together. Racing was then abandoned while the injured sailors were taken to shore and hospitals, and the damaged boats were recovered. France driver Quentin Delapierre said, "I think everyone, both team New Zealand and us, are pretty shocked. Full support to team New Zealand and my teammates, also. Hopefully, we’ll recover from this. Everything happened so quickly, it’s pretty cloudy in my mind. I just tried to do my best to avoid the collision but obviously it happened too quickly. I didn’t have the time to respond and steer the boat. It was a super scary situation." TV footage showed New Zealand’s boat lost its rudder, which caused the crash. The two teams had already faced crashes this season, with New Zealand's Peter Burling receiving demerit points for a prior collision in Perth. SailGP features 13 teams racing fast 50-foot catamarans with foils that can reach 100 km/h. On Saturday, Australia won the first race and New Zealand the second. Sunday’s races will start early due to expected thunderstorms.
