Kerala PSC Cancels Medical Biochemistry Exam to Include Non-Medical Graduates; Protests Erupt
February 14, 2026
The Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) suddenly canceled the written exam for Assistant Professor in Biochemistry just before it was held on October 14, 2025. The PSC said non-medical Biochemistry postgraduates must also get a chance, following new National Medical Commission (NMC) rules. But this sudden change angered the Association of Medical Biochemists Kerala chapter and Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA). They called the decision "arbitrary" and illegal since the existing government order requires candidates to be medical postgraduates with MD or MS degrees and clinical experience. The June 17, 2025 notification clearly stated qualifications as MD/DNB in Biochemistry, one year of Senior Resident experience, and registration under Kerala State Medical Council. The medical bodies said Kerala never depended on NMC's inconsistent advisories and stressed the importance of early clinical exposure for quality medical teaching. They warned that allowing non-medical MSc or PhD graduates without clinical training would dilute medical education standards. The associations have complained to PSC and the government. Candidates with MBBS and MD have approached the Kerala Administrative Tribunal. They demand PSC withdraw its decision to include non-medical candidates and finish the selection process for medical graduates immediately.
