The Union Cabinet approved moving the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) from the old South Block on Raisina Hill to the newly constructed 'Seva Teerth'. This decision marks a historic shift from India's colonial past toward a modern future of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). The cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met for the last time in the South Block on February 13, 2026. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "Today, we feel happy that the meeting of the Union Cabinet is being held for the last time in this chamber of South Block. This is not merely a moment of change of place; it is also a moment of the confluence of history and the future." He added, "Symbolically, this is another step of the country from the past of slavery towards the future of 'Viksit Bharat'. In the past years, instead of the culture of 'power', the culture of 'service' has been strengthened in the country. Today's transition will further strengthen these values." The South and North Blocks were built by the British to control India. After independence, these buildings saw important decisions under 16 prime ministers that helped India grow as a confident global economy. The Union Cabinet resolved these iconic buildings will become part of the 'Yuge-Yugeen Bharat National Museum' to preserve and celebrate India’s ancient cultural heritage. It aims to inspire future generations with a connection between India's glorious past and bright future. The resolution expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi's leadership in transforming India's center of governance from a colonial era symbol into the modern 'Seva Teerth'. The South Block's stairs witnessed footsteps from leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi, where crucial decisions made India progress against many challenges such as Partition, wars, Emergencies, and economic crises. These events shaped the country’s stability and confidence. The building also became the site for landmark reforms and missions like DBT, Swachh Bharat, Digital India, GST, removal of Article 370, triple talaq law, and bold security measures including surgical and air strikes. The new office, Seva Teerth, is described as modern, tech-friendly, eco-conscious, and designed to boost productivity for all government workers. Nearly 95 years after South Block was inaugurated, the Cabinet shifted the PMO on February 13, 2026. Prime Minister Modi called the new buildings a key milestone in India’s journey toward a developed nation focused on citizen-first governance and national progress.
