February 15, 2026
Early Saturday morning at about 8:45 a.m., a 25-year-old man went on a violent rampage at the 53rd Street subway station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The man first punched a 51-year-old woman in the face without any reason. Soon after, he shoved a 43-year-old woman onto the subway tracks. Luckily, she climbed back to safety before a train arrived. Police from NYPD’s 72nd Precinct and Transit District 34 arrived quickly. Both women were taken to a nearby hospital. The 51-year-old suffered face injuries, while the other felt pain in her knee and back. The suspect ran away but was caught at a nearby shelter on 20th Avenue. He was taken into custody and questioned. Charges were not yet filed by Saturday evening. This attack raises concerns about rising crime in the city subway. NYPD data shows major crimes in subways rose 17% this year, with assaults up from 65 to 71 cases and robberies jumping 58%. Yet, citywide crime has dropped by 8%. The police continue to investigate the case.
