Gunmen on motorcycles attacked three villages in northern Nigeria's Niger State on Saturday. They killed at least 32 people and kidnapped many others, residents and police said. The raids hit Tunga-Makeri, Konkoso, and Pissa villages in the Borgu area. Niger State police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed six deaths in Tunga-Makeri and the burning of houses. In Konkoso, at least 26 people were killed after attackers set fire to the police station and fired shots around 6am. Residents said the gunmen acted without fear as no security forces were present. A humanitarian source told AFP the death toll in Konkoso may be as high as 38, with victims shot or having their throats slit. Many homes were destroyed by fire. The gunmen also killed one person and burned a police station in Pissa. Many villagers remain missing. This attack follows a recent deadly assault killing nearly 200 in Kwara and Katsina states. The area near the Niger-Kwara border includes the Kainji Forest, a known hideout for bandits and Boko Haram fighters. Local leaders have urged President Bola Tinubu to set up a military base in the area. Nigeria faces criticism over ongoing violence affecting all communities. The government has increased cooperation with the US to improve security, including US military strikes against armed groups this December.
