Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren spoke out against the rising deaths caused by wild elephants in the state. Around 27 people have died recently across districts like Ramgarh, Bokaro, Hazaribag, and others. On February 14, 2026, after seven people were trampled by a herd in Hazaribag, Soren called a high-level meeting with forest officers. He asked them to map all elephant corridors in Jharkhand and train villagers in affected areas. "Comprehensive steps must also be initiated to stop elephants from entering or straying into rural areas," said Soren. He also said families of those killed should get full compensation within 12 days. Officials said they are bringing six trained 'Kumki' elephants to help drive away or rescue wild tuskers. About 70 teams are managing aggressive elephant herds, including one that killed 20 people in West Singhbhum in January and another female elephant that killed five in Bokaro this month. Since 2019-20, man-elephant conflicts have caused 474 deaths in Jharkhand. Soren called the deaths "a matter of serious concern" and pledged sensitive government action.
