BAJAUR: A fierce terrorist attack rocked the War Mamund police station in Bajaur district on Saturday night. Terrorists armed with light and heavy weapons struck the station. Police quickly fought back and stopped the assault. Sadly, Additional Station House Officer Gul Mahmood Din was killed defending the post, a senior police official said Sunday. “The police personnel successfully foiled the overnight attack of militants at the War Mamund station, but Additional SHO Gul Mahmood Din was martyred after fighting bravely,” he stated. The rest of the police staff were safe. Attacks against police and security forces have risen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan since the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire in November 2022. Earlier this week, four policemen including an SHO died in a terrorist attack on a police party in Dera Ismail Khan after a search operation. Meanwhile, tragedy struck again in Bajaur’s Salarzai tehsil on Sunday. An unexploded mortar shell exploded at a house in the Kardok area, killing one child and injuring eight others, including a woman. Rescue sources confirmed that eight children and a woman were injured, with several taken to Khar Hospital and some referred to Peshawar for advanced treatment. Rescue 1122’s Riaz Ahmed Khan said the children found the mortar shell and brought it home before it exploded. Officials called it an accident and launched an investigation. Local agencies secured the area and collected evidence. Last September, a mortar shell blast killed four teens and injured two others in Bajaur, highlighting the dangerous presence of leftover explosives in the region, Bajaur Police Chief Waqas Rafiq told Dawn.
