PM Shehbaz Sharif Begins Historic Visit to Austria After 30 Years

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday departed to Austria for a two-day official visit. This is the first visit by a Pakistani prime minister to Austria in over three decades. The last visit was made by then PM Nawaz Sharif in 1992. The Pakistani government shared a video of the premier and his delegation leaving from PAF Base Lahore. The visit is at the invitation of Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker. Both leaders will hold bilateral meetings at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna. They will also co-chair a meeting with top business leaders to boost investment between the two countries. The government stated, "The prime minister’s official visit to Austria will add new dimensions to the bilateral relations between the two countries." PM Shehbaz will attend and speak at the Pakistan-Austria Business Forum, organized by the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO). He will also meet with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. In September 2025, Grossi praised Pakistan’s nuclear program progress and cooperation with the IAEA. The Prime Minister is set to address a United Nations event titled “Sustainable Development: The Path to Global Peace and Prosperity.” Accompanying him are Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi. The Foreign Office highlighted that the visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of Pakistan-Austria diplomatic relations. It said both leaders "will take stock of the entire gamut of bilateral relations." The countries share strong, friendly ties based on dialogue, cooperation, and respect for international law and UN principles.
