The Government Maharajas Taluk Hospital at Karuvelipadi is in a poor condition due to lack of basic facilities, infrastructure, and specialist doctors, say local residents. The hospital serves several areas including Kannamali, Kumbalangi, and Chellanam. Many residents avoid inpatient treatments here because of inadequate care and safety concerns. "Almost all medical cases are referred to Ernakulam General Hospital as there are no facilities to treat them here," said Ismail Muhammed Ali, a resident. Stray dogs and snakes roaming inside and around the hospital compound are scaring patients away. The hospital owns two ambulances that are left unused and are deteriorating, forcing residents to depend on expensive private ambulance services. "The two ambulances owned by the hospital are lying idle and deteriorating. As we cannot depend on the hospital even for minor medical needs, we are compelled to approach private hospitals and pay exorbitant charges," said resident Firoz Thangal. Councillor Kavitha Harikumar admitted the hospital is in a deplorable state. She confirmed urgent steps will be taken to build a compound wall and control stray dogs. The Hospital Management Committee will be reformed quickly to improve services. Residents noted the hospital building is centuries old, poorly maintained, and dirty. Due to these issues, many patients travel long distances to Ernakulam General Hospital or opt for private care. A plan to upgrade the hospital and add a super-speciality block was approved by KIIFB six years ago. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan laid the foundation in 2021. But little progress has been made. MLA K.J. Maxy said delays are due to problems with the contractor and implementing agency. "The KIIFB funds have not lapsed. Preparations are underway for the retendering process," he explained. Residents hope swift action follows to restore faith in their local hospital.
