Eluru district recorded 1,499 abortions in 2025, according to the Medical and Health Department. The District Collector, K. Vetri Selvi, has ordered a full probe into these cases. The district has 115 scanning centres, including 102 private diagnostic centres. In a recent meeting, officials reviewed enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994. Collector Selvi said, “The sex ratio is 934:1,000 in Eluru district, which is alarming. Those violating the PCPNDT Act should be booked.” She directed police and health officials to step up enforcement. Decoy teams will be deployed to catch those illegally performing pregnancy scans. The Drug Control Administration was also asked to monitor medical shops to stop drug sales without prescriptions. A medical officer, speaking anonymously, told The Hindu that each abortion case will be investigated in detail. Officials will check reasons for abortion, scanning location, pregnancy month at abortion, mother and fetus health, and if the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021 was followed. Ms. Vetri Selvi urged awareness drives on the PCPNDT Act and informed the public about the toll-free number 18004256131 to report illegal abortions.
