Parents of students at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in A. Kondur village, NTR District, have raised alarms over poor hostel conditions after more than 12 students suffered rat bites. Around 240 girls live in the hostel with reportedly low-quality food and bad sanitation. A parent said, "The incident [rat bites] occurred due to unhygienic conditions at the KGBV. The septic tank was overflowing, there was no proper drains and leftover food was being dumped in the open, leading to squalid conditions on hostel premises." Students also faced mosquito bites because windows lacked mesh, and monkeys reportedly entered the dormitories. District Collector G. Lakshmisha visited the school on February 14 and blamed some staff for negligence. "Special Officer M. Shyamala, who was found negligent, has been surrendered to the government," he said. NTR District Girl Child Development Officer B. Vishswa Bharati confirmed, "The condition of all the 12 students who suffered rat bites was stable." She added that proposals for appointing a regular principal, building proper drainage, installing iron mesh on all 80 windows, and raising the ground level with sand to stop water from stagnating, have been sent to the government. Deputy MPDO Sundar Lal, in charge of repairs after the incident, said rats thrived due to poor maintenance. "The septic tank was cleaned immediately, ground filling is being done with 150 lorries of sand, chlorination and sanitisation are being done at the hostel," he explained. The Collector instructed Mandal Education Officer (MEO-II) Keshava Rao, Mandal Education Officer N. Aravind, and KGBV principal N. Vijaya Sundari to closely monitor the situation and ensure improvements.
