Assam Students Lead Bird Nest Conservation Drive Across Districts
February 15, 2026
A student group from Bongaon Chola High School in Golaghat district, Assam, launched Bird Nest Conservation Day on February 14, 2025. Called Chorai Bandhob (Friend of Birds), the team started by distributing terracotta nesting platforms locally. A year later, the initiative has grown. Two NGOs, GRASS and Asharay, joined the effort to widen conservation work.
On February 14, 2026, students from 16 schools in Golaghat and 40 schools in nearby Majuli celebrated the day. The event included dance dramas, exhibitions, and seminars focused on bird protection.
Headmaster Girimallika Saikia, director of Chorai Bandhob, said the goal was to give "space for nests, future for birds." This involved planting local fruit trees to help birds find safe nesting spots. She added the expanding initiative responds to urbanization threats causing decline in specialist bird species.
Students, many from Adivasi communities near tea gardens, eagerly took up the cause. They believe protecting about 20% of the world's birds living in human areas needs safe breeding places.
Ms. Saikia clarified the February 14 date is linked to England’s Nest Box Week, not Valentine’s Day. The timing fits before India’s bird breeding season starting in March and ending in July.
The initiative is the first of its kind in India, inspiring urban residents to build and protect bird nests for sustainable future bird populations.
