Larry the Cat Marks 15 Years as UK’s Chief Mouser at 10 Downing Street
February 15, 2026
Larry the cat has marked 15 years as the UK’s chief mouser at 10 Downing Street. The 19-year-old tabby has served six Prime Ministers since being adopted in February 2011. Officially called the chief mouser to the Cabinet Office, Larry’s job is to catch mice and keep the Prime Minister’s residence rodent-free. He was first chosen as a pet for David Cameron’s family but soon took on his official role.
Larry’s work began with his first mouse catch at the age of four in April 2011. Over the years, he became a beloved figure, often seen outside the PM’s front door in central London. He even made headlines by pouncing on a pigeon as cameras awaited Brexit negotiation updates.
Cats have guarded UK government residences since the 1920s. Historical records show cats lived in such homes as far back as the reign of Henry VIII. Now in his late teens, Larry remains a symbol of charm and tradition at the heart of British politics.
